Costumes are so much more than just fabric stitched together; they embody 50% of the magic that breathes life into a character! When I made the exciting decision to return to the costume industry, I was determined to bring something truly special and unique to the table. After chatting with some of my former clients about my potential comeback, the dreadful debate of "READY MADE" versus "MADE TO ORDER" emerged. If I chose to take orders, I'd be revisiting a path that once brought a lot of stress into my life, and with my dad's cancer diagnosis, it wasn't the best choice for me right now. On the other hand, creating RTS gowns would require capital, and I'd face the dilemma of which size to choose, which character to create, and the risk of investing time and money with nothing to show for it if no one buys. Then, a brilliant idea struck me! What if I could design a gown where neither I nor the customer had to choose a size? Knowing that most of my previous clients were party princess company owners who often struggled with hiring performers based on costume fit or having to buy multiple versions of the same gown for different performers, I realized how challenging that could be for a company. So why not eliminate that hassle? Designing size-inclusive costumes involves intricate pattern-making and thoughtful adjustments to cater to diverse body types. This blog post dives into the exhilarating journey of crafting costumes that beautifully fit and flatter every body shape!
The Importance of Size Inclusivity
In today’s vibrant world, where diversity and body positivity are shining brightly, size inclusivity in costume design is incredibly important! Traditional costumes used to cater to just a few sizes, but now, modern costumes celebrate inclusivity, making sure everyone, no matter their shape or size, can feel absolutely magical.
Understanding the Process of Pattern Making
Pattern-making is an exciting and crucial step in costume design, acting as the essential blueprint for every garment! Patterns need to be flexible and versatile to create costumes that perfectly fit a variety of measurements and lengths.
Designers kick off the process by crafting a basic block pattern that can be customized to their heart's content. This block pattern is the foundation for an array of styles and designs. For instance, a costume for a plus-size body might need extra ease in the hips and bust, while a sleek design for a petite figure would emphasize fitted lines. Designing a gown that can "magically" adapt to different sizes and maintain its stunning look on every body shape was a thrilling challenge! Plus, any technical elements enabling these 7 sizes in 1 had to be seamlessly integrated into the design, looking intentional and stylish.
Innovative Techniques for Size Adjustability
Creating a size-inclusive costume is an exciting journey, and it all starts with using cutting-edge techniques that make adjustments a breeze. Here are some fantastic methods to achieve this:
Elastic Insets: Imagine costumes that effortlessly adapt to multiple sizes while keeping their original shape! By incorporating elastic materials in key areas like the waist, you can achieve just that. For example, a rigid no-roll super stretchy elastic on a skirt's waistband can expand up to 46", fitting over the hips of a size 16 performer, yet comfortably relax to fit a 24.5" waist.
Adjustable Straps or Closures: Say hello to ultimate comfort and customization! Adjustable straps, ties, or closures let wearers fine-tune their fit to perfection. The shoulder "collar" features snaps that can be tightened or loosened based on shoulder width, while the corset bodice allows for cinching or letting out in all the right places.
Layering Construction: A dress with layers can be adjusted to flatter different body shapes, empowering customers to craft their ideal look without compromising on comfort. This is why the bodice, undershirt, peplum, and skirt were designed as separate pieces.
Length Adjustability: A Functional Approach
Length adjustability is essential for size-inclusive design, as many individuals struggle to find costumes that fit their height perfectly. By integrating adjustable features, designers can cater to a wider audience.
Techniques for Length Adjustments
Adjustable Length Linings: With the magic of adjustable linings, costumes can be seamlessly transformed to accommodate individuals of all heights, whether taller or shorter than the typical sizing. That's why my skirt design is ingeniously crafted with two pieces! One part is the "shortest" skirt length, and the other is the fabulous extended waistband. The elastic waistband already masterfully handles waist circumference adjustments, so now we can joyfully focus on the length! Simply folding up the original hem won't work, as it wouldn't align with the skirt's smaller circumference nearer the waist. Plus, the skirt hem endures the most wear and tear. We wouldn't want a taller performer to let down the hem and encounter snags or holes from it dragging on the ground for a shorter performer. So, the solution is brilliant—adjusting the height from the waist using the extended waistband, cleverly concealed by the bodice and peplum!
The Creative Journey of Costume Design
Every costume tells a captivating story, and the adventure from concept to creation bursts with creativity and innovation! The design process is an exhilarating ride that includes sketching imaginative ideas, selecting the perfect fabrics, experimenting with vibrant colors, and meticulously crafting intricate patterns.
Costume designers often find inspiration in art, nature, or history. Many of the "fabrics" your favorite character's gown is made of are woven with magic! Recreating that enchanting effect in reality is a thrilling challenge and my absolute favorite part. Layering diverse types, shades, and textures of fabrics is what gives a costume its depth, sparkle, and enduring charm. It's what makes my costumes truly shine and stand out!
Exciting Challenges in Size-Inclusive Costume Design
Creating consistent fits across a wide range of measurements can be a challenge, requiring lots of testing and adjustments. Designers get to focus on ensuring that costumes are not only stunning but also comfortable and practical for all kinds of movement. That's why I love testing on real party princesses! As a former party princess myself, I understand exactly what the role demands. It's fantastic to have a best friend who runs a party princess company, as her performers are always excited to try on my latest designs and share their feedback. And, of course, a photo shoot is an absolute must!
The Exciting Rewards of Size Inclusivity
Embracing the challenges of size-inclusive costume design is incredibly empowering and rewarding! Seeing the sheer joy on someone's face when they find a costume that makes them feel beautiful and confident is unbelievably fulfilling.
It's like creating a source of happiness for everyone, which fills me with joy too. Now, I can wholeheartedly focus on crafting stunning costumes and sharing my creativity with the world!
